I highly recommend watching this film/documentary Autoluminescent about Rowland S. Howard, beautiful, gentle man, lyrics that break your heart, guitar that rips it out of your chest. Rowland of bands, the Young Charlatans, The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party, These Immortal Souls, Crime and the City Solution. It's on i-view ABC at the moment, for Australians, but if you are anyplace else try to get this screened in your city. The Birthday Party footage is just so impressive, those tall, spiky, screeching sounds, amazing.

This is a trailer for a film which came from one of my favourite blogs, Advanced Style. Most of the time its the women more advanced in age whose style is more advanced in flair, glamour and individuality. What a breath of fresh air is this, no dull 16 year old eyes here, no victimised waifs of 18. Thank you.

Oh another blog I love is Into The Gloss, make-up and skincare junkies beware. I love the Topshelf sections where you get photos inside peoples bathroom cabinets and make-up stash, then a long ramble of them talking about all their favourite products. My dream come true!

Miss Athénes, is a great blog, not only so I can see what my friend Mariaflora has been up to, but her gorgeously romantic, punk, goth, super stylish exploits and friends are captured on her lomo camera to perfection.

The Peak of Chic is a charmingly written interior decoration blog. Right up my alley, quite old fashion style in a grown up, intelligent, bold use of colour, kind of way. Great pictures from old magazines and books.

Memento Mori

This is one of William's latest rings, it's set with a rutilated quartz which he hand carved a skull into the back of. It has MEMENTO MORI (Remember that thou shalt die) written in Latin around the band.

These kind of rings were extremely popular right up to the beginning of the 20th century.

Here are some other examples of solemn messages which have been found on skull (or death's head) rings from the 15th and 16th centuries.

This one is not strictly of this death's head vein but I like it,

My Birthday

It was my birthday last week and boy was I spoilt. WLG gave me some Bernard Willhelm X Camper skull buckle ankle boots (see HERE) ages ago because he couldn't wait until my actual birthday to hand them over!

WLG then took me out for afternoon tea at the Windsor which was delicious. I especially liked our camp waiter and his generous sparkling rosé distribution.

Here are some more delightful gifts, banana earrings from Thea, green silk knickers from WLG, YSL pink lipstick from Josh.

In the afternoon Garth brought me some gorgeous yellow Calla lilies some Crémant de Bourgogne brut which we drank with apple and guava juice and sewed myself a leopard print silhouette dress to wear out to dinner. We supped on dumplings and sipped white wine in the evening and I was tucked up in bed before midnight. CHARMING

This is a brilliant David Lynch film, Wild at Heart, I think it may be my all time favorite. Isabella Rossellini plays Perdita Durango and I love her make-up, her look in this. I've been doing my own version of this face all week, darkest eyebrows, peachy-yellow eye shaddow up to eyebrow, cat eye black eyeliner, all inside water-line and bright red-orange Lady Danger lipstick by MAC. Strong.
I do recommend the book this film was based on The Story of Sailor and Lula by Barry Gifford. Gold

Why hadn't I seen this film before? I really can't explain, but now I have and I must sing it's praises. All anyone needed to tell me was that Quentin Crisp was playing Queen Elizabeth I and I would have been sold. Didn't Christopher (Kane) reference this film for his A/W 08 collection when I worked there? This all points in the direction of, if you haven't seen this film RUSH to the video shop and rent a copy.

The other Friday night though, feeling adventurous, I ventured out in my high heels to see The Lovebirds, creation of cabaret super vixen Simoncee Page Jones. As you can see I was happy to be out, I even ordered an espresso martini! I hope they perform this somewhere else again soon I'd like another fix. Maybe the Butterfly club?

I mean after watching A Single Man, and being a long time fan of the film Cabaret, I thought I should go straight to the source of both these tales, author Christopher Isherwood. Piroska is off this weekend for a party in Hobart, and needless to say she required a new dress. I conjured up a black silk shantung bustier dress. Its heavily boned, the boobs look a little deflated in the photo because the mannequin isn't endowed as well as Piroska.

The necklace, also specially made, by WLG of Metal Couture is made up of baroque swirls, chains, beetle claws and animal skeleton in oxidised silver with a shiny green beetle center piece set in resin.

It was the last Bohemian Masquerade Ball and I'm not sure if it was Mexicano Day of the Dead theme but thats how we went.

Thea was wearing a Carmen Miranda style turban she made herself, GOLD vampire teeth, and a deadly black sequined leotard and leopard print tights. Swoon, she is quite delectable.

Piroska wore a dress I'd made her years ago (to attend a Nine Inch Nails concert in) and painted her face half skeleton, half pretty lady.

Down the coast, far far away from civilization, where no phone reception reaches (well not vodafone anyway) a little poodle named Rupert and two humans ran riot.

We even braved the sea and went in for a dunk. It was so freezing our legs were aching just walk in. There was a lot of screaming on the way out I can tell you.

So, while I was "working" the other day, I stumbled across this Versus hand-bag on ebay. I've been trying to find myself a new handbag and I've been stumped as to what I want. No hand bag in the world seems to suit my look.

The satchel? Too preppy
The slouchy bag? Too hippy sloppy bogan
The Doctor? Too up-tight
The Hermes copy? Too Olsen

I did want a teeny-tiny Chanel bag but that's way more evening and I have a million small clutches, completely aside from the price factor, (mind you I would accept one as a gift).
Now, thank you to a certain WLG, this will be arriving in the mail soon and it will fit heaps of crap in it, and, matched with a wiggly poodle, some huge round shades and a bouffant hair-do, I'll feel perfectly futuristicly Bride of Frankenstein, lady-like.

Dolly bags

I've been whipping up some little purses and bags of late. Gorgeous leather purses in all different colours, cherry red, black, metallic blue, metallic barbie pink, silver and a patterned brown. I have a few deluxe brocade ones too (cut from a dress, which was donated by a friend's opera singing grand-mother). The drawstring Dolly bags all have handsome lucky tails now too.

The Tender Hook

I remember doing a couple of days as a costume assistant, on set for the boxing ring scenes for this film. I was quite disturbed by all the testosterone flying around. I guess it was like being at a real life boxing match.
Cappi Ireland designed the costumes. I used to work with her when I got my first job, the older girls taught me what was the best matt red lipstick to buy (Poppi) and which cigarrettes to smoke (Peter Styvessant soft pack). I'd still take any advice Cappi cared to impart.
Rose Byrne plays the leading actress and she is dressed divinely, such a pleasure to watch. Gorgeous and a sort of sparkling way.

The Gertrude Street Projection Festival

It's over for now but all last week we had all these fascinating projections in and on the shops along Gertrude Street. This photo was taken by Bernie Phelan on opening night. These are the Council Flats on the corner of Gertrude and Brunswick Streets. I loved it. There was also a merry-go-round on the turret of the Post Office.
Kit Webster made an Ice Queen Palace style sculpture which went in my little window and had flashing lights projected onto it. I'm rather sad its gone.

Thank you Gertrude Street Association for organising such a charming event.

The Broken Hearts

The Broken Hearts describe themselves as "predominantly DJs, both live and on radio" but the list goes on, and the fact that they dress like matching carnival dolls FULL-TIME is just the icing on the cupcake. Thank you Rose Chong, for taking us on an outing last Saturday night to see the Burlesque Hour Loves Melbourne. Moira Finucane, my all time favorite performer, was typically terrifying, gloriously glamorous and hysterical in equal parts. I love her so much.

The Social Studio Talks

This is an example of the sketches I'll show at the Social Studio talk. I drew this in lead pencil when I was brainstorming designs in my lounge-room one afternoon.

The Social Studio are hosting a series of fashion talks from local designers during July, I am doing a talk next Wednesday evening 29th. I will be musing about the art of dressing up and where/ from whom I draw sartorial inspiration. I've compiled a selection of my drawings to show on the night. From early sketches of my collection to portraits of my favorite stylish women of the world.

Pam Hogg is another on my sartorial inspiration list. I drew her the other night by the heater. I felt a little daunted, not just by a desire to accurately portray her rather arresting beauty but because her magic is the fearless disregard for conventions whilst still appearing to be the most glamorous warrior woman on the planet. I feel you could never wear a creation of hers without a wild heart.
This video of her song, Opel Eyes is fucking fierce. I love how Pam is surrounded by these deadly gorgeous women.

1. Podcasts, when its cold I stay in to do crafty projects while listening to people's weird sexual hang ups on Savage Love HERE, This American Life, The New Yorker: Fiction, and Stuff You Missed in History Class, are also on subscription. BBC Radio 4 have heaps of good podcasts too, I listen to Women's Hour, Excess Baggage and Play of the Week. ABC Radio National have, Lingua Franca, Design and Architecture and The Book Show.

2. Della Reese, Whatever Lola Wants. I find it very inspirational. I also think it would be wise to learn THIS dance routine. You never know when it might come in handy.

3. A stew cookin' in the oven. THIS Jamie one is delicious. Knock back a hot toddy while it cooks.

4. Dom Perignon for a little celebration at home or mulled wine at Southpaw (Gertrude St.) for a drink out.

5. Explorer socks. Warm tootsies are the way to go when you wear a short skirt.

6. A striped velvet scarf, I've made a couple for Edgeley and they are named Bonham-Carter after a lady who knows how to pile on layers in a funny fashion.

7. Books, lie in bed and read, while an animal/person snuggles up to you. I suggest, The Help by Katheryn Stockett, or Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger.

8. A walk in the country side. Mount Macedon is chilly and fresh.

9. Succulents that flower at this time of year our Christmas Cactus is fluro pink at present.

10. A hat. A turban knotted high on your head. Keep your head warm and you'll hardly notice your legs freezing off.

I am just rearranging the bookshelf, due to excessive weight it had collapsed. I thought I might share some of my old favorites, in case anyone is looking for a suggestion to read on cold autumn nights.

Boy George, Take It Like A Man, self explanatory really.

I adore Evelyn Waugh, maybe I'll re-read this now...

Roddy Doyle wrote the Commitments, his books are brilliantly funny, I couldn't recommend them more.

I think I read this whilst performing my job as a door b*#ch at Alia. Jacqueline Susann wrote this whole book all about her poodle Josephine. I loved it so much, it may be what started me on my quest for a poodle of my own.

Tom Robbins also wrote Skinny Legs And All, which is my favorite novel of his. It is, amongst other things, about a can o' beans, a dirty sock, spoon, painted stick and a conch shell travelling across America. I don't have a copy of that one so this stands as a second in line.

Jo Duck is shooting my Edgeley look-book tonight which is extremely exciting. Preston Zly have, very kindly, lent me some seriously sharp shoes. Preston Zly are a bit of a cult in Melbourne, they design and hand craft all their shoes. There is even an inspiring story behind each design.

I am completely in love with the Selina wedge, (above) and have started a fund to buy some for myself.

The Sojourner, (above) is named after Sojourner Truth, an African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist they should reflect the uniform element of the collection perfectly.

Poodle mania

A couple of people sent me the Di$count girl's poodle post, (see HERE) which almost made me regret getting a black poodle, who can never be dyed pink. I drew Rupert the other night. He doesn't have a weirdo haircut ... yet. I don't really want a weird looking dog though, I would like a pastel one. The poodles cut to look like camels and stuff kinda annoy me. I may get Rupert's hair cut into pom poms for next Gay Carnival day.
Quite beside the point, I am is desperate need of more poodle paraphernalia.

Welcome to my gracious home! I felt like having my own Home Beautiful spread so I took some photos the other morning. This charming little photo of Rupert is taken at a fantastic angle for including all the grot lying around on the floor.

Can you see me reflected in the mirror? I'm reclining in bed on a Sunday morning with a giant silk turban on. Because I live on a busy street, I feel the need to dress like a lunatic if I'm taking Rupert out of the house before 8 o'clock am.
